Should I get the HDR, Pre, or USB?

According to the rules I can't post about other products, so I'll say this. I have a 2.1 passive attenuator/monitor switcher that I purchased for around $250. How would a device like this perform in conjunction with a DAC1? If I put it into calibrated mode, defeated the DAC1 volume pot, and used the passive attenuator to control the balanced output from DAC1? 

 

Would this be inferior to the HDR alps potentiometer?
