Standby heat
Standby heat
Submitted by Paps on Sun, 2010-08-15 01:17since almost 4 years i'm a happy dac1/dac1usb and now dac1pre owner.
this summer my device was getting really hot especially in standby mode.
if i had to guess i would say more than 50° C depending from input selector position,
lowest heat in "analog" position, much more in digital input position.
no chance to assemble device in a 19" rack close to other devices,
knowing that heat is greatest enemy of each electronic device.
now i'm thinking of attaching alu-radiator to iron sheet case of benchmark.
can you pls tell me what dac1 is doing when there is no active input signal
and could i pls get 2 of these "white system power plugs" connected to mainboard?
then i could outsource ring core.
not to forget: sound is awesome, there still is nothing comparable on the market!
The DAC1 USB/PRE/HDR keeps
The DAC1 USB/PRE/HDR keeps almost all electronics powered even when in Standby/off mode.
I'm not familiar with the ""white system power plugs". Can you please explain?
Thanks,
Elias
Hei Elias, on the linked foto
Hei Elias,
on the linked foto you can see first plug after ring core connecting ring core to mainboard.

it is a white 2 part connector i would like to get.
if i had to order more than 1 i would do so.
thx for support,
Volker
Hello Volker, We do not
Hello Volker,
We do not sell that part, as we do not condone modifying the device. We strongly recommend that no parts are removed, replaced, or altered, as it will not improve the performance and will void the warranty.
All the best,
Elias

Just curious please, regarding my DAC1 PRE: Is it correct that standby/off mode only powers down the LED's and nothing else? Or if not, what else is actually powered down when in standby/off mode, and why?
Thanks in advance!
Yes, you are correct.
Yes, you are correct. Standby only powers-off the LED...everything else remains powered.
Best,
Elias
USB Relais
Hi Folks,
I solved the Standby heat issue by using a 5V Relais which switch the 220Vac of the DAC. The Relais is connected to the 5V of the USB. That´s mean if the PC is off-->no 5V on USB-->no 220VAC for the DAC-->The DAC has no heat standby heat at all.
It works like a charm.

I have a similar, but less
I have a similar, but less sophisticated solution :-)

cooling option for the DAC1 PRE
Some of these alpha heatsinks will greatly help with heat dissipation from the DAC1's.
