What happens when 196/24 files are played via USB connection?

Greetings!

I have a Benchmark HDR and I use it on a Windows 7 PC, connected via the USB port.  The software that I usually use to play music files is MediaMonkey.

I recently bought a some 196/24 and 176/24 music files.  In all of Benchmark's product descriptions, it says the USB connection is capable of up to 96/24 audio, but these hi-res files (196/24 and 176/24) files still play on my setup.  What is happening?  Is there something doing an on-the-fly downsampling?  If so, what is it downsampling to?  What is doing the downsampling and how does it know that it needs to do this?

Thanks everyone.

Paul

Hello Paul, Windows 7 is

Hello Paul,

Windows 7 is downsampling the audio stream.  If you go to your 'Playback Devices' menu, highlight 'Benchmark 1.0', and click 'Properties', you will see what sample rate it is being downsampled to.

Best,
