192 Playback

Hi

I'm a new user and didn't read the spec thorougly enough so I shouldn't be disapointed that I cannot play back 192 via usb. However, I see that this can be done via a direct connection between my 2006 MacBook Pro digital output socket. Can you tell me the particular type of cable I need?

Through usb direct from Mac using iTunes the sound is not very good. I am trialling Pure Music which gives excellent audio. Is using this software totally necessary or are there adjustments that I can make to my computer ?

Thank you

Hi jake43, The direct

Hi jake43,

The direct (optical) connection from the Macbook is also limited to 96/24.

In the folder 'Applications>Utilities', there's a utility called 'Audio MIDI Setup'.  Open this utility, and choose the Benchmark 1.0 device.  Be sure that the 'Format' is set to 96000.

Best,

Elias

re. The direct

Hi Elias

I'm confused. Dac 1 is 24/192 is it not?

So how are 192kHz files played? Is the problem the computer or the Dac?

Thanks

Hi jake43, The digital audio

Hi jake43,

The digital audio optical output on Mac computers is limited to 96 kHz.  The optical input on the DAC1 can accept up to 192 kHz.

Mac Mini w/iTunes + Amarra music computer player

Elias,

I found out the misfortune of Apple computers being limited to 96khz output, but are you familiar with the Amarra music computer player?  I understand that Amarra is supposed to override/disable iTunes core audio decoder.  Amarra plays up to 192khz and I believe this will allow iTunes music files that are 192khz to play at that resolution using the Amarra music computer player.  Amarra switches the sample rates automatically without you having to manually switch it in the audio midi!

I just downloaded a 15 day demo of Amarra on 12/11/2011 and I don't have any 192khz files to test it.  I need to research the Amarra website to confirm my belief.  Please let me know what you find out.

Thanks in advance!

Munf
