Two questions concerning the Ultralock feature...
Submitted by psykostx on Tue, 2009-08-11 08:35My main question, is Ultralock only available when utilizing AES format or does it also work its magic on S/PDIF? The manual appears to read that this is so, but it is does not clearly distinguish this in the features bullet list with paranthesis, so I have to ask.
Also, on a more curious note, why isn't the word "upsampling" more prevalent in the DAC1's marketing? Upsampling is used on DVD players and the quality an upsampled standard format DVD can produce is truly amazing...all of the digital noise/artifacts disappear in much the same was as the DAC1 makes happen with audio (though I am not sure if the method is the same logically/electronically). In fact, upsampled DVDs look so good there is almost no point in buying Blue-ray until it becomes standard. Why aren't you guys throwing this word around left and right? I mean upsampling 24-bit/192khz is pretty impressive!
Hey psykostx, how's it
Hey psykostx, how's it going?
The UltraLock clocking system is active on all inputs (coaxial, XLR, optical, USB) and all DAC1-compatible formats (S/PDIF, AES, USB).
Regarding 'upsampling', digital audio is very different from digital video. The quality of the digital audio cannot be improved simply by re-sampling (up or down). However, re-sampling may be a part of a larger process that DOES increase the quality of the playback system. This is the case with UltraLock. The re-sampling in the UltraLock system allows the local (ultra-low jitter) clock to dictate the D/A-conversion rate, keeping jitter sidebands well below -135 dBFS.
All the best,
