AD2408-96

I have a chance to buy a used AD2408-96.  My question to you is, do you still offer service/support for this product?  Also, there is no IMD spec listed in the product manual, I was wondering if you have measured it, or if that is irrelevant in ADC?  What are the differences between the ADC channel pairs in this unit and the newer ADC1 (besides sample rate)?  In other words, is the AD2408-96 as good as having 4 x ADC1s, minus the 192kHz SR ?  Would I need a reference clock on the AD2408-96 to run all 8 channels in phase?  Is it true that Mars Volta used the AD2408-96 on their first album?  Sorry for all the questions, and thank you for all your answers!

Hey Jon, I'll have to get

Hey Jon,

The AD2408's are incredible.  The performance is very close to the ADC1.  The ADC1 adds the flexibility of adjustable input gain, plus the capability of simultaneous low-resolution and high-resolution conversion, and of course the high-resolution metering.  But the performance specifications are very similar.

IMD for the AD2408's were below the measurement limits of our AP system.

You will need an AES reference signal to lock ch.'s 1-4 to 5-8, but if you have the coax version, you can use one of the outputs from the first bank of 4 to sync the second bank of 4.  Otherwise, you can use a single external clock to lock them all.  Either way, the reference signal does not need to have low-jitter, as the PLL design is very tolerant of jitter (although it takes MUCH longer to lock to signals then our current technology).

Yes, the engineer on the first Mars Volta record has said that he did use Benchmark AD2408-96's as the front end for that recording.

Best,

Elias

2408 manual and questions

Hi,

I recently found a 2408-96 on ebay and picked it up IMMEDIATELY.  However, when I got it there was no manual included.  I have searched everywhere for a pdf version of it, and it doesn't seem to exist.  If there is a pdf manual sitting on a hard drive there I'd love to get a copy.

I did find the manual for the 2402, which has the pin2<>pin3 error noted in red.  My 2408 also seems to have the inverted polarity issue.  Was this on all the 240x's?

Thanks,

Angelo Quaglia

Hey Jon, Sorry about that...

Hey Jon,

Sorry about that...  We've got them posted on the manuals page now:
