I am very fond of the stereo ADCusb and I saw at AES the ADC 16, any plans for a DAC16? (Linkable to 32) Because I often mix on an analog desk and am looking for a benchmark-like quality with more channels!
I have a Benchmark Dac1 USB. I do not have a stereo pre-amp at this time.
I do have a Lexicon MC-4 surround processor in which I use 2-channel bypass when playing music in 2-channel because, (in my opinion), the DAC1 USB is superior to the Lexicon MC-4's DAC when listening to 2-channel stereo. The Lexicon is simply used for a gain at this point. I would like to buy the Benchmark DAC1 HDR, but it lacks a home theater bypass.
I am a happy owner of a DAC-1 used in a two channel music only system. The sound quality and construction quality are superb. Most of the time the DAC-1 provides all the features I need, input selection and volume control. However ....
As a very happy owner of the DAC1 HDR I only have a single wish, namely for an HDMI input, so I can add my universal media player (Oppo BDP 95) to the HiFi chain and enjoy Blu-ray and SACD music.
I was reading the design ideas of the Chord QBD76 DAC and I see that they discuss about the filter tap lengths and that the longer the tap length the better the sound quality.
Add a big numerical Volume Level Display to the DAC1 HDR. This display could show attenuation in -Db, or on an increasing numerical scale from 0 to N, or be switchable between the two. It could be mounted in the faceplate or sold as a separate add-on product. Check out the big displays on the ARC preamps or the cool dot matrix display on the Resolution Audio Cantata. On the DAC1 HDR it would be nice to see the volume setting from across the room, and to be able to repeat exact volume settings when needed.
With class A discrete outputs and digitally controlled analog volume controls using fixed ladder resistors, full complements of XLR analog inputs and outs. A couple of built in "Environmental Filters" to trim or raise MID (3000Hz) and TREBLE (10KHz) at 1dB increments to deal with bad recordings. There is my dream DAC/PRE!
Thid idea is just the ability to use the DAC-1 as a preamp for hometheater use in a simple way:
Let the analog input have a switch to allow fixed volume output. Let's say a switch on the board that bypasses the volume control for the analog input ?
This way one can use a hometheater receiver / processor with analog output for main channels, let the receiver / processor control the volume, and when I listen to CD/PCM or other digital input signal, the analog volume control will be used !
It would be great if the base version of DAC ( DAC1) had remote for volume control. It may skip the headphone amp.
So the overall package will still remain below $1000 or even lower.
