USB Power
From Benchmark
The USB interface can only supply a limited amount of power to external devices. However, a USB interface cannot provide nearly enough power to operate a high-quality audio device such as the DAC1.
It is possible to build a USB to S/PDIF interface that is bus powered. A few companies manufacturer bus-powered, native interfaces (Edirol UA-1EX; Behringer UCA202) that provides SPDIF in and/or out at 44.1 kHz/16-bits or at 48 kHz/16-bits. These devices work well with the DAC1 only because the DAC1's clocking system, UltraLock, rejects all of the jitter output of the USB device. However, these devices perform very poorly when connected to most D/A converters.
